Caffeine & Umbrella's....The Grant Barnett shoot....

on Thursday, 29 July 2010
There is something about driving through London at 5.45am in the morning that although insanely early, is also somewhat invigorating. Our early start was to be blamed on the needs of a commercial fashion shoot, a team of 9 arriving at The Rag Factory in Brick Lane at 7am to dance, prance and generally get out and about with designer Brolli's.
Caffeine was in high demand and after some excellent work from the team, a few 'is that rain' moments and some rush changes in the back of taxi's we finished tired but happy...oh and all with a small crush on a certain pink, punched lace umbrella.
I chose these images to post as these are the ones I am likely to put in my portfolio, they are the one's either often passed off as 'mistakes' or images that for some reason, speak to me! Plus a little behind the scenes at the Rag Factory - with thanks to: The Rag Factory, Tim, Tom, Ilona from IE Makeup, Rachel West Wardrobe stylist, Jo from Nicholas Hair and fantastic models Emily and Louise.
Final images approved and passed to campaign to be posted soon...watch this space!

Loreal Colour Trophey...

I was asked to take pictures for the entry of the Loreal Colour Trophey on Sunday and met a great team. I worked with Lucy (MUA) who I have worked with before on a couple of shoots and we had a great catch up and as per usual she did an amazing job. The model was new to the scene and this was one of her very first hair shoots - mine too then!
I used a lighting scenario I had never worked with before and chose to use 3 heads. The main light was quite close to the model and we used a medium sized soft box, a snoot was pointed on the background and then there was a fill light which I was bouncing off an umbrella back into the frame. Studioxill helped with this set up and really looking forward to doing some more experimenting with the help of their layouts.
Here is wishing Julia all the best in the Awards...I look forward to my dinner and drinks invite on winning!! ;-)

Welcome Antwon Allen and Elle Coleman, the faces of the Commercial Fashion Shoot yesterday. I have not had a chance to review all of the pics yet and decide how I feel about them as I decided to give myself most of the day off and enjoyed copious amounts of tea in bed with Hollyoaks and re-runs of Friends! This is just a sneak preview...unedited. (What am I doing?!) I am thinking of maybe adding a few filters and so forth and de-saturating the pics but all to be experimented with.
Keep your eyes on the blog for the finished set of images and some words from the cast and crew. All of whom were lovely I might add.....thank you to Elle, Antwon, Jenny, Maria and Sophie.

Things for the Limited Ink shoot are coming along well however I daren't breath a sigh of relief as no doubt 3 days before the big day something will happen! Anyway, I have a beautiful female model confirmed, the male model confirming the date, a wonderful and fully 'lets get stuck in' MUA and hair stylist and a wardrobe stylist who just never fails to get what is needed and always delivers. I also have an assistant along for the day so, so far so good. Now all I need...oh yeah all of the props and remaining garments.
Anyway, here are some sketchbook tears and sneak preview pics to keep you entertained and also a list of what I am currently trying to source - feel free to contact me if you have anything you are willing to donate!!
Final Pics to come in Feb!

Having been in bed since midnight Boxing day my hours have clocked well over 115 and now, at 10pm I decide I have the energy and the urge to write a post.
Anyway, looking fully ahead to the New year and 2010 (in my case being celebrated with a shot of whiskey in a Lemsip) is high on the agenda. Having never written a business plan and my marketing plans starting at 100-mph and quickly halting to a stand still, I feel it really is time I pulled the finger out and got some solid plans down. Therefore my new notebook (any excuse) is now clearly adorned with asterisked goals that by this time next year I hope to achieve. Some realistic, some aiming high and some just frankly ridiculous. (I don't see Ricky Whittle and myself getting married anytime soon, yes my embarrassing but guilty pleasure!) Anyway, onward and upwards with me new notebook, my new goals and now my points on how I plan to achieve each one. My first one is learning to manipulate natural light better and for that I have already purchased a Holga. I cannot WAIT to get some pics up.
Anyway Happy New Year to one and all and here is wishing you all the best for 2010.
More blogging to follow once my paracetamol hangover has subsided.

Am very excited to see my pictures in the French Fashion magazine FASHIZBLACK and think they look fab....well done to the team - thank you guys! This was a nice thing to come back to after my birthday weekend in Wales with a few friends, lots of lovely food, wine and wet walks! Very relaxing and I managed to avoid my laptop for a full 3 days - woop woop!
In case anyone is interested I am running a promotion at the moment whereby if you recommend a friend to my Carli-Art group on Facebook you AND your friend get a £50 voucher to spend on photography with me. So £50 towards a shoot, some prints or anything you like really. All you need to do is recommend a friend to my group, get your mate to write on my group wall "Free money you must be bonkers. **** recommended me to Carli-Art"
You and your friend will then each get a £50 voucher and there are only 10 to give away so get recommending!

My biggest conundrum today is....which boots to get?!
Black go with everything or Brown also go with everything? It is a tough one!
Well I needed something to keep me motivated while making calls to various South East Venues about Christmas Events and so forth. Its only 7 weeks away or something and I needed to get on it in terms of getting some seasonal work. I should have been 'on it' about 2 months ago, again, bad planning. If I am still here next year...I promise I will think ahead more!!
My planning will look like this:
Jan - July
Get over the sherry hangover and say a happy new year to all your clients.
Continue to build on my events guide for 2010.
Call, call and call business's to promote my services - concentrate on advertising and PR agencies
Decide on an actual marketing budget and plan for it - help needed for this I think
Work work and work
Market Market and Market
Network Network Network
Events Events Events
Research Research and more research
Assist - I have decided 8 weeks are being dedicated to assisting.
Aug
Xmas Events! There it is....start in August!
Get to London Fashion Week
Sep - Dec
Hopefully actually work!
I better actually write a plan like this, you know, running a business and all that. There is a lot I would like to achieve next year. Hmmmm, Christmas project for sure. My next two years in business, planning and execution. Scary.

Foto tip Friday.....lighting at home

I rarely use studio lights as I just prefer working with natural light. I prefer its subtleties and also manipulating it to get the effect I want. I could certainly do with more training / practice in this area but out of the two its what I do best. That is not to say studio lighting isn't great. If I had the time and the confidence I reckon I could really get into creating some amazing effects, after all photography is the capture of light and if you know what your doing with it your practically there!

Anyway, before I start babbling on I thought I would provide some quick tips on creating lighting at home, studio style or location.

- You don't have to have professional lights. Experiment with halogen lights as these are probably the most neutral in terms of colour. AVOID fluores
cent as they will create a real hue which will be hard to get rid of, unless of course you want that effect.
- Tungsten light (your average lightbulb) can work really well just bare in mind it creates a slight yellow hue on everything and often, is not as bright as your average halogen bulb.
- Manipulate the light using reflective surfaces. You can buy professional reflectors from Ebay (for example) or you can even use things such as white, silver or gold bits of card.
- Use dark card or surfaces to absorb light where you want to. Use the reflector and the darker colours together to create the situation you want, or as close as.
- Use windows!! French doors can create beautiful light as it streams in. Use this to your advantage standing your subject parallel to this light.
- Soften light using natural tights or even pieces of tracing paper. (Beware of fire hazards here!)
- For more shadows use less light, say just one at an angle. For more even light use more. 3 or 4 lights should be more than enough and should eliminate all shadows and give you a 'high key' finish.
- May sound obvious but don't shoot directly into the light unless you are trying to create a silhouette effect.
- If you are trying to achieve a slight lens flare or a glare in the camera then don't shoot direct into the light but slightly at an angle. Move around and move your subject and you will find the right point. This is where digital camera's are an advantage as you can check and shoot until you have it right.
- If outside and using natural light then first thing in the morning when the sun is rising and last thing in the afternoon as the sun drops are the best times to get images. The light is soft, directional and you can achieve a number of effects with beautiful contrast between shadow and light.
-Experiment! That is what you need to do most of all. Get items or your mates and just have some fun. Work with the light, manipulate it and see what you can do.

Two things.......I am ashamed I dont know more about film. Thought a while back I would do a shoot this year / early next year in film and really learn more about light......I still want to but after reading THIS interview I want to even more now. It's not even want, its need. Who am I.

Have been far from up to date on the current London Fashion week buzz and should really be paying far more attention. If like me you are not at the event and cant seem to keep up with it or just cant find the time then here is a quick overview thus far.

Day 1:
Headonism by Stephen Jones - new designers and their hats!

Day 2:
Hello who is this Mary Katrantzou, she is amazing!

Day 3:
Erin O Connor models for Hannah Marshall for nothing more than £10 and a cheese panini. (Ok i actually don't know if this happened on day three but it was an interesting fact and I couldn't find out what day it was!)

Day 4:
Fashion Fringe the nurturing initiative to help London designers was won by Jena Theo.

Day 5:
Viccie B turned up at Fashion East, the no profit organization set up by London's Truman Brewery in 2000. She said "I know what its like, how stressful and scary it can be." Yeah sure you do love. Bet for your new range launch you also had to remortgage your parents house, work bloody hard for years at college / university and then market yourself on actual talent rather than fame.
Day 6:
To come! I do have an insider who is getting back to me with goss and what to look out for in fashion next season!
Horses need not apply....

I would really like to take some interesting portraits of some interesting people. Maybe odd people, or actually odd is probably the wrong word but different. So people with hobbies that involve bondage and jelly, or girls that like pretending their boys with pieces of fruit. A guy that is married to his tractor or a couple who live with their horse.
Inspiration probably from the iconic Portfolio publication, my friend gave me issue 42 so quite an oldie but man a goody. Never though portraiture was really my thing and although its not my strength, in a way isn't fashion portraiture just of the identity you are giving someone rather than the identity that maybe they themselves own? I have always thought about the actual model. So if they weren't there in your studio or on your location dressed in clothes you gave them to wear and looking like you or the art director wanted them to; what would they be doing or what would they look like. Ordinary people I am sure. Portraits of models with no make up maybe. Nothing unique or exciting in that. Maybe I could find out a secret about them, something that they did outside of modeling. A thought anyway.
Apply if your interested in being snapped, whenever, wherever and however. Horses need not apply.
What a lot of toddle........

Well its Sunday and I feel like I am ready for the weekend but hey, it is nice to be all busy and buzzy. I did a fashion beauty shoot for FASHIZblack magazine on Friday and the hair and make up artist were amazing, the model was also excellent and had an amazing athletic figure. I was the problem. Not as happy with the images as I would have like to be, maybe as I was so happy with the last lot but I got a couple of images I am kind of happy with. Editing them now so we will see. Hard to edit images your not happy with though.
I missed the fashion show which I really wanted to attend due to a fire or something on the M25 so that was a disappointment but had a far better time than expected yesterday evening at the Feast of Dorset that I photographed for friends that own Seamless Tents. Amazing tents (of course!) and music etc and we ate a legendary fish dinner (www.thefishclub.com) which went down a treat after the photography. Numm Nummm.
Right I'm off, nothing of real content to say and need to get these images edited plus would like to spend some time vegging out in front of the TV in my PJ's, eating crisps and Chocolate raisins.
