With this Ring I Thee Wed....

Another fantastic interview here at Carli-Art photography and we have the very talented, Creative strategist Doug Hewett from Engage Group, London. Specialists in communications, branding and employee engagement.

We met Doug in his office...(yes of course he made me a cup of tea!)

****
• Doug, what 3 objects on your desk best describe Engage and why?

1. My mini
‘Munny’ doll - whenever anyone joins Engage Group they get given a little white plastic toy to design up however they like. It’s our way of saying you’re part of the team, and celebrating everyone’s individuality. We’re building a shelf to put them all up in the foyer…

2. My potted plant - last year we ran an internal competition called ‘Plant Idol’ to see who could grow the best desk plants. Our HR manager Emma won it easily, her Bonsai was awesome.

3. An old antique letterpress - when we left our last office I saved this from being thrown out. It stamps our very first company logo, before we joined as a number of companies to become Engage.

• I love a cake, anything sweet really tips my scales so is there a cake Friday arrangement at Engage or another advocate of biscuits who we can thank?

Shuk is our resident chocoholic - she’s always got a great stash. And we have cup cake ‘bake offs’ every now and again for our company charity. We have breakfast for everyone on Friday mornings (and beers on Friday afternoons).

• Engage state they transform relationships. Now being a fan of Dear Maggie columns when younger how would you answer the following reader question: “Dear Doug, I am thinking of proving to my boss we can work as a team, what would you recommend?”

Haha. Um, well I’d say good bosses appreciate people that see problems as challenges and opportunities. Be yourself though, that’s the most important thing.

• Pick one and why?
o Telephone
o Good old Letter
o Twitter
o Post it note

Hmm… everyone loves a letter, but I’ll have to go with Twitter - I’m a big fan of social media, one of our main growth areas has been collaboration online for employees. We help turn employees into brand advocates, which in turn affects customers.

In an age of such modern communication methods and less face-to-face experiences, do you think this makes your job harder and do you think this year may see a return of the more personable approach?

Good question - I think modern communication methods like social media and web 2.0 functionality can be profoundly personal and engaging when used in the right way. Face-to-face communications will always be really powerful, but you need to invest in talent to get great line managers. The real answer is that a combination works best - it depends on the needs of your people.

• Where does the name Engage come from?

When we came to developing the brand, it summed up our approach of engaging people with art (beautiful creative) and science (measurement).

• You have some great clients including Action Aid, O2 and Transport for London. Can you tell us a little more about these assignments and why these companies chose you to take on the challenge?

Sure. With ActionAid we created an online hub for people to build profiles, collect donations and keep their friends and family updated with blog entries. We’ve built a long-term relationship with O2 - we’ve done everything from developing a social network for employees, to measuring brand engagement across the UK. And TFL are another big client of ours - we’ve created campaigns to support sustainable travel, and developed microsites that allow Londoners to collaborate online. I’d like to think that they choose us because we’re good people to work with, we understand their needs and aren’t afraid to challenge them with new ideas.

• If you weren’t at Engage what would you be doing?

Travelling around the world to somewhere I haven’t been before…

• Like most offices there is a constantly a fair amount of gossip doing the rounds….so anything exciting you can reveal?

There was a good one the other day - turns out one of the Account Managers has a dad that was in the Human League.

• What does 2010 see for Engage?

Lots. It’s a big year for us. After a tough 2009 for everyone in the industry, it’s about pushing on now - offering better services for our current clients, and winning new clients with great new ideas.

• Final question….back to the sweets….your boss leaves a box of Thorntons in the office, a total of 35 beautiful chocolate wrapped delights. He takes 2, the mob in the office take 19 but then Sarah from HR brings a further 47 chocs in. Add these to the 15 you have stashed in your desk & divide this by the number of letters in Engage. How many chocs?

I have 15 chocolates stashed in my desk?!

Leather strapped decisions...

My biggest conundrum today is....which boots to get?!
Black go with everything or Brown also go with everything? It is a tough one!

Well I needed something to keep me motivated while making calls to various South East Venues about Christmas Events and so forth. Its only 7 weeks away or something and I needed to get on it in terms of getting some seasonal work. I should have been 'on it' about 2 months ago, again, bad planning. If I am still here next year...I promise I will think ahead more!!

My planning will look like this:
Jan - July
Get over the sherry hangover and say a happy new year to all your clients.
Continue to build on my events guide for 2010.
Call, call and call business's to promote my services - concentrate on advertising and PR agencies
Decide on an actual marketing budget and plan for it - help needed for this I think
Work work and work
Market Market and Market
Network Network Network
Events Events Events
Research Research and more research
Assist - I have decided 8 weeks are being dedicated to assisting.
Aug
Xmas Events! There it is....start in August!
Get to London Fashion Week
Sep - Dec
Hopefully actually work!

I better actually write a plan like this, you know, running a business and all that. There is a lot I would like to achieve next year. Hmmmm, Christmas project for sure. My next two years in business, planning and execution. Scary.

Shades of grape....the return of velvet?

As promised here is a quick email interview with the lovely Theresa from La Geneve North Events. Submerged in the fashion world and currently living it up at LFW she gives us some news on their most recent show which offers emerging designers the opportunity to establish themselves in the fashion world and promote their garments at a professional, well managed catwalk event. Plus, get free goody bags of course!

" Darling hi hi" Kiss on both cheeks then the left one again. "So your fashion show gave emerging and independent designers an
opportunity to showcase their talents to the masses...out of the list did you have a favorite designer there?"
Well our show saw 10 designers showcase over two nights. I would say on the first night, my favourite was Hanna's collection HMH Couture. Her grecian style dresses are just beautiful, and I fell in love with those when I first saw them about a month ago! She is very talented and she already has a celebrity following so that is sure to continue...http://www.hmhcouture.com/ <http://www.hmhcouture.com/> For the second night, I loved Marthe Aime's collars http://www.martheaime.fr/ <http://www.martheaime.fr/> . They stood out as being quirky and unique and I could definitely see myself wearing one of those! Marthe Aime was our only unisex label in the show. This show also featured Monica Couture's collection which was extremely popular at our last event at the Valmont Club. Her collection contains beautiful pieces with embroidery, embeli
ishments and Swarovski crystals. Stunning!

"Favourite item of clothing at the event and it doesnt have to be on the catwalk?"
Mazelinos's whole look which was evident throughout her collection was incredible - there was a strong Breakfast at Tiffany's feel (and I love that film). I abolutely adored the bright red headpieces which each of the models wore on the catwalk. I think I might make a trip to Brighton soon for one of those!

"Come on, were all dying to know - What did the goody bags include?!"
So our goody bags included an item of Love Genevieve jewellery, lots of designer and exhibitor info, a copy of DV8 magazine which has recently launched in South London, and a bottle of SIP water. I was loving the lemongrass and ginger flavour!

"Ok moving onto more recent fashion week events who was the last person you spoke to at the event and what did they do?"
Well last night, Yolande and I
went along to the KTZ show and then straight on to the Carlotta Gherzi for Sado show. We were with Daryl from Cliquisse Models and a lady called Tara who has been in the fashion indust
ry for many years.

"Have you any backstage gossip such as trips, falls, bitch fights or exciting bits of fashion info we should be looking out for?"
Well, we almost had an incident at one of our last shows where the one of the models shoes came unstrapped so she was having to slide her foot around whilst pretending that everything is fine. She managed to make it back without falling, I am not sure how!!

"Who do you usually attend fash
ion shows with and what do you go with the intention of achieving or getting from the event?"
This is my first year attending LFW and I have had a great time! It's very hectic and manic, especially as our shows were scheduled for the first part of the week too. Yolande and I have both been attending shows though, and so I think by the end of this week we will be ready to collapse. The main reason, I go is to see which trends are going forth to S/S 10. The hair and beauty trends are also really interesting as we have to create our looks for shows so it's great to get inspiration.
I would love to have seen the PPQ show and the Louise Goldin show.

"Your fashion style tip for the Xmas season?"
Velvet! I love the new style of velvet dresses with the intricate embroidery and devorie effects. They can be really sexy, sculptured and they look incredible! They are perfect for the Autumn and Winter season. Plus my colour for A/W would have to be the teal colour as seen in the shows for Mark Jaco
bs and Twenty8twelve (A/W09). I love it!

"And what other events has La Geneve North got planned for us this year?" We have lots of shows lined up for private clients, plus we are going to be starting a range of workshops shortly, designer samples sales and February's "A La Mode" looks set to be another exciting show with designers already requesting applications! Better get back to work I guess...

Well I would never have guessed velvet, you mean that horrible fabric that causes palpitations if stroked the wrong way and hangs from old women in shades of grape?! Yes indeed people.....look out for it!

LFW quick fix.....

Have been far from up to date on the current London Fashion week buzz and should really be paying far more attention. If like me you are not at the event and cant seem to keep up with it or just cant find the time then here is a quick overview thus far.

Day 1:
Headonism by Stephen Jones - new designers and their hats!

Day 2:
Hello who is this Mary Katrantzou, she is amazing!

Day 3:
Erin O Connor models for Hannah Marshall for nothing more than £10 and a cheese panini. (Ok i actually don't know if this happened on day three but it was an interesting fact and I couldn't find out what day it was!)

Day 4:
Fashion Fringe the nurturing initiative to help London designers was won by Jena Theo.

Day 5:
Viccie B turned up at Fashion East, the no profit organization set up by London's Truman Brewery in 2000. She said "I know what its like, how stressful and scary it can be." Yeah sure you do love. Bet for your new range launch you also had to remortgage your parents house, work bloody hard for years at college / university and then market yourself on actual talent rather than fame.

Day 6:
To come! I do have an insider who is getting back to me with goss and what to look out for in fashion next season!

Droooool.......

Something is missing in my life.....I know this how?  I went shopping today.  OK I know, I am a woman and it is therefore my prerogative to want to shop & buy lovely new things, plus I have gone over 2 months without making a wardrobe purchase so of course, that had to be rewarded!  Anyway, something is either missing or I am looking for something.....so the psychiatrist would say!

It could of course be the fear of abseiling 120ft down the side of an office block this Friday.  In aid of The British Red Cross and in order to get my home town of Berkshire a new ambulance a load of us are abseiling 120ft.  I am yet to decide if i should go in fancy dress or plain leggings, I am sure either will be a fright to 9-5er's as they mull over excel spreadsheets, a cuppa and a hob nob.

Anyway what I bought and wish I had the money to buy is something completely different....therefore feel free to drool as I will be doing!

Catching up......

A La Mode Fashion Pics are now live and can be seen various places so check it out! Really pleased with the images altho disappointed with lens sharpness in some of them, but hey you live and learn.  The light in there was good though and not any strobes or nasty redness so yippee!  Posted some pics in my previous post but here is one of my favourites..... this model just looks beautiful and i caught her just as she seemed to be thinking of the daunting task of walking down the catwalk!  I love the emotion in her eyes.

The night was a blast and everyone was lovely.  No 'Fashion Darlings' anywhere!!  Just a good bunch of people all loving fashion.......another show to come on 18th September so if you want to learn more or see the press write up and more of my images visit http://yolandeletshou.blogspot.com/

Sleeping sweetly.....

Apparently people sleep you know...not that I have had very much of that this weekend but then thats what its all about!! I have been crazy busy so excuse the lack of post, i apologize I have not been getting anywhere close to my daily entry.  So Friday saw the car passing its MOT, which is a minor thing but all the same no car = no work! So actually, phew!  Friday night saw amongst other things me spending 4 hours in traffic on my way into London, however I was not disappointed as I arrived at a buzzing fashion show held @ The Rich Mix in Brick Lane.  It's not a venue I have been to before & was a great place with modern lines, white walls and blocks of colour and a great space which hosted the A La Mode fashion show.  The event was awesome and saw some amazing new designers graze the catwalks.  Although I did not get in as much networking as I would have liked I met some interesting people who I hope to keep in contact with & apart from anything else, really enjoyed the evening.  Just 300 odd images to edit now!  A sneak preview for you of course tho!  See above and below.

To continue the hectic events I worked Saturday and then visited Swindon on Saturday night.  Only to be leave an inebriated male in charge of directions and ending up in Bath!! Sounds ok, yea well not when you need to be 100 miles the other way!!  My early night in prep for Sunday turned into bedtime at 2am followed by a 7am start Sunday.  More work and then yes, Fat Talent Live.  I know you have heard me mention the hype of this event before but seriously, I am still shaking from the excitement of this weekends performers and even more so, the amazing, AMAZING crowd,.  A few hiccups were had but the team pulled together and we saw some brilliant musicians perform a circus type punk, hip hop, freestlye rap and even a MJackson impersonator who had the crowd flicking their fingers and shouting praises from the back rows.  Again.....lots of images to edit so a sneak preview to follow tomorrow!!

Stay tuned cos the excitement is only going to grow!!  Ahhhhh, excitement!  (I haven't event had my daily dose of haribo today!)

Yuuuk to marmite....criminal......

Well I managed to grab a few moments of the fashionistas time this morning and will hopefully be bringing you an interesting insight into the world of Yolande Letshou.....not only the lady that invited me to the fashion event on Sunday (I will stop talking about that one day!) but also who in the future I plan to do some art collaborations with.  Here is a quick fire interview.....

Name: Yolande Letshou
Occupation: Artist / Journalist

So you do fashion styling, sketching, customize your own clothes, make cards ,sell and mark artworks.....anything you don't do?
LOL.  Unfortunately not - joking!  I don't do photography and only customize clothes for myself.  I just love & am completely obsessed with the arts, in fact I am in love with it.
Your true love....the thing you really want to do career wise, what is it?
Become a full time artists and retire as an Art Teacher.
How did you get started in fashion?
Professionally it began in 2005 when I applied for a position in the fashion fabrics buying department for John Lewis Head office.  I really had to sell myself as ideally a fashion degree was desired & my degree was in journalism and my background was in other media related roles.  I would say John Lewis taught me a lot about fashion and business.  Also, when I was 18 i ran my own jewelry stall in the summer for 2 years whist studying.
What makes you tick....pick one: Clothes, accessories, love, talking, friends, alcohol or Art?
I am an accessories junkie but I feel part of that is to do with the fact that my mother has been involved in the accessories business for over 15 yrs, so makes me tick the most, Art.  (A big apology to all my friends - you know i love you all!)
What or who inspires you?
Gosh, I am inspired by all sorts.  I mean a woman walking down the street in a specific way can inspire the structure of one of my paintings.  I am also inspired by catwalk shows, Artists Frida Kahlo, Paul Cezanne, fashion mags and my mother.
Favorite item of yours at the moment?
Oooooo, hard.  I would say the lady in the bandage dress which is a painting of mine, it didn't take me long but I really like the outcome and think I was in the right frame of mind when I painted her.
Most recent art piece?
The African influenced painting that I have just finished for a client.
Tell me more about your canvas's & landscapes....
Landscapes were my first love before moving to fashion.  I like to pay attention to every little but of details so they can be very time consuming and unfortunately don't sell as well as my fashion pieces.
I want to get 'in your click' and assist you on a fashion show or styling job...what would persuade you - Pro activeness / enthusiasm or just the hard cash baby!
Personality and creativity!! You need to be a really quick thinker and be able to use your own initiative as I tend to work under a lot of pressure and haven't time to babysit.
Marmite?
Yuuuuuk
Peanut Butter - crunchy or smooth?
Smooth with plan donuts, uuuuummmm.
Advise for budding creatives?
It doesn't happen overnight and only the strong survive.  Don't be easily disheartened.  I am constantly marketing myself and always carry business cards.
One piece of make up you can't live without?
Eyeliner
Final Words?
A big thank you for taking time out to interview me and anyone that wants to join my mailing list - info@lovegenevieve.co.uk

Well quite frankly I am a little disappointed that I seem to have unearthed a Marmite hater & to top it off, smooth peanut butter and on top of donuts?! Interesting combination to say the least.  I am crunchy all the way on top of crumpets but different strokes, different folks! To learn more about Yolande, her artwork, her fashion styling, paintings and all other manner of pies she has her fingers in then log on.

Gutted.....

Well I was very excited to be invited to the pre- party to London Fashion Week last night held in Knightsbridge......yes I think the grin on my face spread from ear to ear as I starting planning outfit combinations in my head.....it was going to be glorious!

Unfortunately I didnt make it.  A shoot overrun and flooding near to my obode prevented me from returning home until gone 11pm.  Knowing it would take me a good 45 minutes to get changed and another 90 minutes to get into London I feared the champagne would be finished, abandoned glasses on the bar, drunken fashionista's would be starting to grab their feather jackets & I would be stood there all ready to 'live it large mate' with noone and nowhere to do it.  So I was in a grump today, which for everyone in the office was delightful!

I haven't managed to catch up with some of the guests yet but when I do the gossip gets posted here first people!  After a facebook message from someone at 3am consiting of just one word "Pissed" I take it the evening was a great success and I cannot wait to get the low down! Watch this space.
