Crimbo clicking and the week ahead....

I have been working on Christmas the last few weeks as although I predominantly concentrate on doing corporate or PR photography for firms or venues to use for marketing in future, this year I am also doing a guest driven photography package.
This isn't like some other Events photographers that you see where a studio set up is available or an area reserved for pictures and hen printing on site, I am offering a relaxed, guest driven image service capturing reportage pictures of the evening alongside posed pictures of friends and guests together - where they want to be. So at their table, on the dance-floor or at the reception having a drink.

Now this is a larger challenge for the photographer as more of a concerted effort has to put into seeking the guests and asking them if they would like their pic taken. It also leaves a lot of the lighting situation out of your hand or rather more for you to deal with. There is then the distribution of the cards and letting everybody know where they can see and purchase the pics. That said I love these challenges, I truly believe the images are far more fun, relaxed and really capture the atmosphere of the event and the emotions shared between the group being photographed. I get to build a report and we can have a laugh together and get an image that really is all about them and that, I love!

It being a Sunday and me having tried to work all day but spent a lot of it perched on the armchair watching TV 'just for a moment though' before going back to work; I felt it necessary to introduce you to the week ahead. We have a whole week of interviews with photographers!!! I wanted to do this to give you a feel of what other photographers were about and also some advise or experience that I was unable to offer. I have spoken to a range of photographers but have a couple that specialize in portraiture and weddings, a side I don't too often touch on here.
Therefore, prepare yourself for interviews with the following beauties:

  • Tuesday: Emma Coleman from Blink Photography
  • Wednesday: Bob Kirchstein from Opal Creative
  • Thursday: Elayne Barre from Elayne Barre Photography
  • Friday: Double trouble with Kat and Hannah from Artis Studios.

Any last minute questions you want to ask? Get in touch@ hello@carli-art.co.uk

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday! x

"A sensual & user friendly experience...."

......It says that on the box......and does it fulfill.......oh yes!!
Having brought a graphics tablet this weekend I have fully adapted already and I am a total convert!  Although yes it takes a little getting used to there are an endless number of programable functions, the pen can be as sensitive as require it and in terms of editing....well it just feels natural!  I am editing pictures better, quicker and more efficiently.  It really is a great start to the week!  Yes I am sad and yes, this excites me!  So what tablet did I get, how much was it and a few FAQs for those digital artists or photographers that may be looking at their options.....

WACOM Intuos 3 A5 Tablet
  • Cost: £229.00
  • Colour: Grey
  • Size: 345 x 262 x 113mm with an active area of 203 x  152mm.
  • Pressure sensitivity: 1,024 levels
  • Connection: USB
  • Comes with: Pen with loads of nibs (very impressed!)  / board / mouse / cable / Pen Stand / Install CD and if you need it Coral Painter Essential
First Impression?
Ahhhhhh - I think I am in love.  Its so lovely and shiny.  Would prefer it in black but hey, nothing is perfect!  (Apart from possibly the Mac Book Pro!)
Easy to use?
Initially if you are used to using a mouse it will take a while to get the feel for the pen and the way it reacts with your movements and your computer.  It is very intuitive and sensitive and once you have spent an hour or two navigating around Photo Shop or Illustrator and the rest of your computer and apps you will wander how you lived without it.  It also has programmable function buttons down the side which is great, i find these work well when swapping from app to app.
Did it really speed up editing time?
YES!  I can honestly say in the last few days I have been far more efficent in editing.  The clone tool in PS3 reacts as it should, the pressure sensitivity of the pen offering far better control and manipulation than a mouse or the track pad.  It is quick to jump across tools and alongside all the key shortcuts my Mac works as it should do and work just gets done.  Plus it feels good while I do it.  Editing can be really boring especially if you have batches of things and this just speeds it up, makes you more productive & above all, brings a little fun back!

Education Education, Who owns it.....

Copyright and charging for images is a confusing enough subject for photographers, let alone when someone else is trying to understand it or your trying to explain it to them.  I often find people do not understand that you are charging for the use of an image and yes, I can charge you £400 to use that picture in an advertising campaign.  I have had many a heated conversation with friends who seem to think I'm there taking pictures so why shouldn't i just hand them out willy nilly to anyone that wants them.  Anyway, my search for an explanation of copyright or a definition or do's and dont's never stops so I thought I would combine a whole load of info I had collected and post it here.  I hope it offers some insight!  If it confuses you more - oooops.

Copyright
 - UK Copyright Law last amended in August 2004 states that the photographer owns the rights on all pictures he or she has taken with the following exceptions;
The photographer is an employee of the company the photo's are taken for
There is an agreement which assigns the copyright to another party
- Copyright is an automatic right and arises whenever an individual or company creates a work.  To qualify, a work should be regarded as original, and exhibits a degree of labour, skill or judgement.
- When copyrighting a work it should be stated on the image or with accompanying documents. - A copyright notice should contain the following: Copyright, Copyright C symbol, Year of Publication, Author/Copyright owners name, Title of the work.

For more info on copyright visit www.copyrightservice.co.uk

Charging
- Negotiating rates is variable on your experience, what you are photographing, the length of time you will spend on the job, the copyright of the images, how they are going to be used and the license to use agreement.
- Rates vary for books, personal use, marketing, PR, corporate and commercial work
- It is suggested for a low budget corporate shoot, a full day should be charged at £800
- Charges for online use of photos for commercial and business, for a year should cost around £850 for an image of 800x600 pixels.
- Bulk processing of digital files @ £100 per hour
- Rates vary tremendously and there are so many altering factors.  I would recommend going with your gut instinct but do your research.  The below websites are excellent for reference.
