Body art has been getting increasingly popular for the past 20 years with the stereotype of hairy, mobbish bikers being thrown to the wind and middle class fashionistas almost classing it a necessity. Much like a pink well bagged pooch. Jo Waterhouse has now released a book about the art which forces the viewer to look at it as not only skin pigmented images. Sleep depravation....

I am tired.  Really tired.  Think I may also be coming down with a cold which is great news considering I have a weekend planned in Manchester but moan not I hear you cry....for lack of sleep can create great things. 

Actually I often find I do my best creative thinking when seriously tired or when its really late, must be when all the real craziness creeps out and I let it overflow slightly.

Anyway, thinking about lack of sleep gets me onto one of my fave images called 'Insomnia' by photographer Jeff Wall.  Just something to get that brain ticking.

Oh So Quiet.....

 

 

Here I am making my excuses again for being so quiet!  I have been very busy but am back with some fashion pics! I really love some of these images actually and if I am totally honest, I was not expecting to.  

The project was for some Science Students who as part of a major project had to express in a creative format some science theories and ideas.  Such as Science as communication, science as  a brand and so forth.  Well with a bunch of homemade clothes, pots of Early Grey and a very heavy bag we all trundled round London with the beautiful model Morgaine Matthews.  Random changes in the bushes, dresses covered in lots of newspaper and the odd glimpse of a bottom here and there certainly got us some stares but we had a fantastic day and even though the sunlight was a little bright in places I am pleased with the contrast and depth of the pictures.  

Morgaine is a beautiful model to work with and left me little skin clearing CS3 work to do (which was disappointing as I have also just brought a graphics tablet.....more posts coming on that soon!) but personally I am happy and I hope the girls are too!

When I actually get round to it I will be updating my website with these and my previous ChildsPlay images.

Catching up......

A La Mode Fashion Pics are now live and can be seen various places so check it out! Really pleased with the images altho disappointed with lens sharpness in some of them, but hey you live and learn.  The light in there was good though and not any strobes or nasty redness so yippee!  Posted some pics in my previous post but here is one of my favourites..... this model just looks beautiful and i caught her just as she seemed to be thinking of the daunting task of walking down the catwalk!  I love the emotion in her eyes.

How did you get into photography?
I was actually really bad at Art & thought that I was therefore not creative or meant to be in that kind of industry; Art is kind of your only way into things like that when you are young. If you’re no good at art it’s considered you’re not a creative person. But I got into fashion styling and working with some magazines & photographers just cos that is what I enjoyed. The images were never really what I wanted, so in 2002, I thought, that’s it, I am doing it myself. The camera was just a means to an end and a way of creating images of the things that I wanted to see.
Are you self-taught?
Totally. I collect cameras and just work with them creating pictures using only natural light. I tend to use medium or large format cameras, all film and love to use different equipment. I just pick up an available camera, it doesn’t bother me about having to use my own all the time or a particular brand or anything.
So your work now is art and labeled as such, did you work within the commercial industry at all?
I worked for magazines and catalogues and did a lot of commercial projects, some that I wasn’t necessarily proud of. But personal work for me is where I love to be and where my work is really. My images are not genre based necessarily, they started as fashion imagery as that is the industry I came from but now they are all projects that inspire and interest me; I just want to create imagery that I enjoy.
Who / What / Where do you seek inspiration from?
Travelling and locations. Locations are so important. I own a motorbike and love to just spend days looking for hidden locations and places to shoot. I also do a lot of travelling. I used to live in China and spent an awful lot of time there just absorbing the culture and the surroundings, exploring places you wouldn’t necessarily normally go; seeing people playing billiards on the street or something similarly ‘out of the ordinary.’ I don’t always take a camera with me either. People think as an image-maker or photographer I would take a camera everywhere but you don’t need to, I have my memory. Plus I don’t want to spend hours stopping to take pictures, its hard to get emotionally involved if you are always taking pictures.
Oh and Dance. I am really interested in dance at the moment. The way the body moves & people look when dancing. I am learning to dance too. (See the pic on his site – the man in ballet shoes – its Linus!
What drives you to be successful?
What is success?? Success is something different to everyone. I just want to be happy.
Are you happy?
Yes I am.
What other photographers or artists do you admire?
Sarah Moon is great, and Bill Henson, really interesting imagery.
What image of your own is your favorite?
The next one!
What is your favorite film?
Gumma by Harmony Korine, it has some boring bits but I think you need that to communicate the feelings and the message; I can really relate to that. I also like the Virgin Suicides.
What is on the Top shelf of your fridge?
I have been travelling so much that I have been living out of a bag for the last 6 months, so I don’t have a fridge. If I did, it would be Soya milk. I love Soya milk.
Marmite, Lover or Hater?
Well I haven’t tasted it. Vegemite put me off!
Vegemite is disgusting, blame the Ozzys! Marmite however tastes nothing like Vegemite.

Linus has made a short film which if you keep up to date with his movements on his website you may get to have a sneaky glance of. I had my own private viewing headphones and all and it was amazing, I sat there in the café and came over all goose pimpled. The music has been specially produced for the film and features for the first time ever, a model that Linus has used for the second time. (He only ever uses models once) Linus also has an exhibition in Soho at the Claire de Rouen 121-125 Charing Cross Rd, so pop in to see some of his prints.

Yuuuk to marmite....criminal......

Well I managed to grab a few moments of the fashionistas time this morning and will hopefully be bringing you an interesting insight into the world of Yolande Letshou.....not only the lady that invited me to the fashion event on Sunday (I will stop talking about that one day!) but also who in the future I plan to do some art collaborations with.  Here is a quick fire interview.....

Name: Yolande Letshou

Occupation: Artist / Journalist

So you do fashion styling, sketching, customize your own clothes, make cards ,sell and mark artworks.....anything you don't do?

LOL.  Unfortunately not - joking!  I don't do photography and only customize clothes for myself.  I just love & am completely obsessed with the arts, in fact I am in love with it.

Your true love....the thing you really want to do career wise, what is it?

Become a full time artists and retire as an Art Teacher. 

How did you get started in fashion?

Professionally it began in 2005 when I applied for a position in the fashion fabrics buying department for John Lewis Head office.  I really had to sell myself as ideally a fashion degree was desired & my degree was in journalism and my background was in other media related roles.  I would say John Lewis taught me a lot about fashion and business.  Also, when I was 18 i ran my own jewelry stall in the summer for 2 years whist studying.

What makes you tick....pick one: Clothes, accessories, love, talking, friends, alcohol or Art?

I am an accessories junkie but I feel part of that is to do with the fact that my mother has been involved in the accessories business for over 15 yrs, so makes me tick the most, Art.  (A big apology to all my friends - you know i love you all!)

What or who inspires you?

Gosh, I am inspired by all sorts.  I mean a woman walking down the street in a specific way can inspire the structure of one of my paintings.  I am also inspired by catwalk shows, Artists Frida Kahlo, Paul Cezanne, fashion mags and my mother.

Favorite item of yours at the moment?

Oooooo, hard.  I would say the lady in the bandage dress which is a painting of mine, it didn't take me long but I really like the outcome and think I was in the right frame of mind when I painted her.

Most recent art piece?

The African influenced painting that I have just finished for a client.

Tell me more about your canvas's & landscapes....

Landscapes were my first love before moving to fashion.  I like to pay attention to every little but of details so they can be very time consuming and unfortunately don't sell as well as my fashion pieces.

I want to get 'in your click' and assist you on a fashion show or styling job...what would persuade you - Pro activeness / enthusiasm or just the hard cash baby!

Personality and creativity!! You need to be a really quick thinker and be able to use your own initiative as I tend to work under a lot of pressure and haven't time to babysit.

Peanut Butter - crunchy or smooth?

Smooth with plan donuts, uuuuummmm.

Advise for budding creatives?

It doesn't happen overnight and only the strong survive.  Don't be easily disheartened.  I am constantly marketing myself and always carry business cards.
