As promised....Vogue baby vogue!!!......

As promised I dually bring you some words from an insider, the words of a Voguesita!

Sophie P is an up and coming stylist and having worked with her before on a few of my shoots, most recently ChildsPlay, I know she has a good amount of talent rolled into those wet look leggings.  Currently doing an internship @ Vogue she offers her insight into the famous fashion mag and her predictions for the coming months and what to look out for on the high street.

So, Sophie, you are currently an intern at Vogue magazine head office.  What were your very first impressions of the offices, the staff and the mag?
I was very nervous and the prospect of working at 'Vogue' was daunting. But as soon as I got there the girl I was assisting was really friendly, she showed me around & introduced me to anyone and everyone which made me feel at home! Seeing Kate Phelan and Lucinda Chambers was eye opening as I have admired their work for years for Vogue. The offices are filled with the most amazing pieces of clothings and accessories. It really is a luxury to see all these wonderful pieces laid out to look at! The offices are cramed with beautiful book's and pictures for reference. It is a cosy and inspirational place to be working.

Do you read Vogue anyway?
I always read Vogue whenever i can afford to buy it! But i am a regular reader or should I say viewer as i do find the volume of the issue's sometime's too heavy to get through. The picture's are my main interest and seeing the new season's item's displayed by the talent's of the fashion director's and the assistant's is something as a stylist I like to keep my eye on.

How many hours did it take to decide what to wear the first morning!?
I think the key is Black! You can't go wrong with black and it seems to be the staple diet of the fashion elite! It didn't take long but I washed pretty much everything I owned so that what ever I felt like in the morning i could throw on. Although i did sideline a theme for my dressing. Black, black and white striped t-shirts and dresses, baggy t-shirt's and legging's with a blazer to make it smarter, shiny legging's and of course high heels to make more of an impression! Brogues my choice for the work place!

Any inside gossip that you can give away....
The place is a lovely and unsurprisingly non glamorous atmosphere. But the people that work there are sweet, elegant, well spoken and do float around the office! They all dress incredibly well with a style i would describe as smart casual. All age appropriate and they all have their own individual twist on their outfit's to suit their personality.
I have been lucky enough to go to a few show's; Bernard Chandrand off Schedule, Olanic and Osman Yousefzada which was On schedule. A part of my job role was to dowload the show's from NY and london from Style.com and collate them for the assistant's. From this i was able to get a great look at all the show's up close that i wasn't able to go and see!

I would look out for electric blue seems to be a key trend for the next few month's along with alot of tassel's and stud's staying through until winter. The Latex/PVC look is here to stay through until A/W '09. Alot of good thing's are headed our way from Topshop Unique which is exciting as it's affordable!!!!!  Haven't bumped into anyone famous although i have 'overheard' a couple of convo's to Kate Moss, Vivienne Westwood's people! But all the fashion director's and Alexandra Shulman all have a great rapor with their regualr models and photograhers hence why they return to work with each other.

How valuable would you say your time at Vogue has been?
My time at Vogue has been so valuable, i have learnt alot and become alot more confident in what i am heading towards. The contact's that i have made have also mean that I have set myself up with people to get in contact with in the future.

Name three things that your experience at Vogue has taught you?
1) Be incredibly organized! Thing's are always on a tight schedule especially when you are arranging schedules for the entire office to attend fashion week.
2) To be more confident when talking to people on the phone ( talking to stranger's was never my favourite!) but when you have to call Milan you have to call Milan!
3) Remain focused on achieving a job in this industry because there is nothing else that i would rather be doing.

What do you eat for lunch everyday or are you nibbling at an envelope like the models?
No! i am not a model and never will be! So i eat what i want, fruit and cereal bars, soup salad or sushi my new favorite place is Itsu sushi . . yum!

Any invites to after parties or exclusive snog’s or fumbling’s with the other staff members or better that.......the designers!!?
I did get an invite to one party but after a whole day commuting and on a wage of a a Fashion intern (Nothing!!!) i didn't attend. Nope no snog's or juicy gossip as of yet but i will keep you posted if i hear of anything!

Are you the only intern or are there others?
There are two department's Fashion and Fashion Features. i am in Fashion and there are three other Fashion interns with me there. Two are sorting the cupboard and all the returns. Another who has come in to help with a supplement coming out in the summer. And me who is assisting the fashion coordinator with the fashion week schedule's but when it get's busy we all chip in with the work load. The other three deal with fashion features and they have very similar roles.

Would you recommend assisting / work experience and what tips can you give to others trying to get into it?
I would recommend it if styling or fashion journalism is somthing that you want to get into. Be aware that there will be times when you are waiting on a list (at Vogue the waiting list is 200 people long) and once you are in you can't come back again unless they pay you. But keep it up it's a fantastic part of the industry to work in and you learn so much from different places. The experience you gain from people who are at the top is invaluable.

Where now for you....what's coming up in your schedule that we should look out for?
I finish at Vogue in two weeks and then i take a little break in thailand. But after my break and a couple of months to build the overdraft up again i will be back on it. After these two weeks i will be sending my CV off to other places including Glamour, Times, Brides and GQ s finger's crossed i might get something more long term with a little bit of money too!

What Sophie obviously missed off the list there was to work with me again!! No seriously, I hope you have enjoyed hearing what she has to say and look out for her as she is soon to be a regular contributor on The Fat Blog!

Fear, Goals, Money & Marketing....

The last couple of days I have spent time in fear, actual fear.  Why you ask, because money is tight and I am honestly wondering if I will be able to survive this year.  I know I should keep going and nothing gets results like being a little scared.  I am pushing my marketing to the limit and investing a lot of time in trying to contact new and existing clients.  One of the things I have also decided to embark on is a monthly newsletter.  This will go to the 'artsy' clients and the corproate clients so coming up with something that fulfills all those needs was a toughey but hopefully....I have managed to achieve it!  It launches on the 28th so naturally darlings...you will have the first peak of it!

So with the corporate side covered just still very much in progress it is onwards and upwards with the fashion side of things.

A gallery in Denmark has expressed interest in some of my images, I am in talks with Monica Din n AKA Chocolcate Blonde about an up and coming shoot which will fuse in a giant messy train crash music, fashion and her wild personality and in the next couple of weeks I am meeting the editor of Blah Blah magazine.  This magazine is Reading born and bred and I am very excited, I hope that we get on, I don't end up spilling my classic Earl Grey or Mocha Latte over the poor man and that he finds my ramblings and work interesting enough so that I can somehow get involved.

So this post has turned into another random assortment of thoughts but I am trying to spread the love at the moment.  Encourage people to get together as a community and support small business' and each other in these tough times.  Community and support of each other I think is the winner here and I for sure will be using this as my marketing tool!

Good luck to you all I say and if I can possibly make any recommendations then the below websites / tips may be useful:

- Website Evaluation.  Does yours offer your clients what it should?  Does it sell your services or products?

Look what I found....

Ok some (many) of you may know about this place already but today I stumbled across a great blog - http://www.fashionphotographyblog.com/

They have a section where you can submit your images to be 'shot of the week' & they have some amazing advise on the sight about everything from prepping for a shoot, getting an agent or representative and maintaining a good relationship with them, right to the piece I was particularly interested in, Exhibiting your work.  I plan on doing an exhibition towards the end of the year, maybe around August sometime so this article was of particular interest and focussed on some things like paper for printing and PR that I otherwise would not have thought about.  Also it has reminded me that I need a book.  Ok every photographer needs a portfolio but since Uni I haven't really had a printed portfolio as I have relied on my website as a reference for clients.  With my new ambition of doing a fashion shoot every 3 months I have come to realize that yes, I really do need a book.  After my next shoot I am looking to hopefully get on an board with an Agent so not only has this blog given me a kick up the backside and a positive reminder that yes I need to do this and my money would be well spent doing it, I have picked up  some great tips on getting started.  Check it out.

9021woooooaaaaahh

I watched it. I sat there glazed eyes, looking at the girls, the guys, the pool, the excessive amount of money...I mean excessive! Seriously is this really what Beverley Hills is like, does everyone look that primed & made over, do 15 year olds seriously have that much disposable cash?! Anyway my predictions for the future so far are this:
1) New girl becomes Miss Fashion and the apple of everyone's eyes - by this I mean the boys. She already has Mr Rich on her tail, I see that Ethan guy (traditional school jock role) latching onto her soon.
2) Shallow, pretty, Naomi the school biiiattch will become best mates with new girl and become less shallow, a little less 'dressed' & discover her true self.
3) We will have a fashion icon, a fashion setter who's wardrobe people will follow in magazines like Company & Glamour.
4) Hot Teacher gets it on with a student. Possibly one of those pigs that appeared in the first programme as well. Who knows, this is Beverley Hills darling!
5) Prince William will make a star appearance, as the Hip Hop side kick to the token black dude Dixon. I see caps turned sideways and white boxers covering pert bottoms that should be draped in P Diddy jeans.

Just a few predictions there but one must keep amused in between job applications, marketing and writing a newsletter....yes a newsletter! I am starting a monthly update going out for the first time on 28th Feb! Woop woop! If you want to be part of the mailing list send an email to carli@carli-art.co.uk with subscribe in the subject title.

Coming soon......a sneak preview into the life of a 'Vogueista'
Yes that is a new word and translates to: Vogue, working at, somebody, secrets, gossip, check back in a few days, excitement, fashion, London, bleeding Vogue, oh dear lord, ooo err, you know you want to.

To be noted.....

1) I might just possibly be able to squeeze in some kind of a social life as well as run my own business.
2) My financial planning definitely needs to get better
3) The world is fashion crazy at the moment & I am jealous I am not at New York Fashion week trying to invade the back stage area or at least get the telephoto lens in there
4) Networking is great, it really is great.
5) Re point above, its also hard work.  Talk about regular updating
6) Lack of Money = Even bigger yearning for clothes
7) Too many Haribo tend to make you feel a little sick for at least 24 hours
8) Keep it local
9) Reading Town Centre really, really, really does not have a decent selection of bars
10) Stiletto heels and driving are a bad combination if you actually want to be able to drive to work without an over enthusiastic OAP waving their fist at you.

"Well...yes I am a dork......"

This week I have mostly been......being interviewed for Yolande Letshou's blog - Yay!  This was a fun interview with a lovely lady so take a peek at it and see what I have to say for myself and while you are there, check out the fashion tips and funky fashion cards from the gal herself.

Inspiration from Linus......

Name: Linus Ricard
Age: 28
Occupation: Photographer / Image Maker
Links: www.linusricard.com

How did you get into photography?
I was actually really bad at Art & thought that I was therefore not creative or meant to be in that kind of industry; Art is kind of your only way into things like that when you are young. If you’re no good at art it’s considered you’re not a creative person. But I got into fashion styling and working with some magazines & photographers just cos that is what I enjoyed. The images were never really what I wanted, so in 2002, I thought, that’s it, I am doing it myself. The camera was just a means to an end and a way of creating images of the things that I wanted to see.
Are you self-taught?
Totally. I collect cameras and just work with them creating pictures using only natural light. I tend to use medium or large format cameras, all film and love to use different equipment. I just pick up an available camera, it doesn’t bother me about having to use my own all the time or a particular brand or anything.
So your work now is art and labeled as such, did you work within the commercial industry at all?
I worked for magazines and catalogues and did a lot of commercial projects, some that I wasn’t necessarily proud of. But personal work for me is where I love to be and where my work is really. My images are not genre based necessarily, they started as fashion imagery as that is the industry I came from but now they are all projects that inspire and interest me; I just want to create imagery that I enjoy.
Who / What / Where do you seek inspiration from?
Travelling and locations. Locations are so important. I own a motorbike and love to just spend days looking for hidden locations and places to shoot. I also do a lot of travelling. I used to live in China and spent an awful lot of time there just absorbing the culture and the surroundings, exploring places you wouldn’t necessarily normally go; seeing people playing billiards on the street or something similarly ‘out of the ordinary.’ I don’t always take a camera with me either. People think as an image-maker or photographer I would take a camera everywhere but you don’t need to, I have my memory. Plus I don’t want to spend hours stopping to take pictures, its hard to get emotionally involved if you are always taking pictures.
Oh and Dance. I am really interested in dance at the moment. The way the body moves & people look when dancing. I am learning to dance too. (See the pic on his site – the man in ballet shoes – its Linus!
What drives you to be successful?
What is success?? Success is something different to everyone. I just want to be happy.
Are you happy?
Yes I am.
What other photographers or artists do you admire?
Sarah Moon is great, and Bill Henson, really interesting imagery.
What image of your own is your favorite?
The next one!
What is your favorite film?
Gumma by Harmony Korine, it has some boring bits but I think you need that to communicate the feelings and the message; I can really relate to that. I also like the Virgin Suicides.
What is on the Top shelf of your fridge?
I have been travelling so much that I have been living out of a bag for the last 6 months, so I don’t have a fridge. If I did, it would be Soya milk. I love Soya milk.
Marmite, Lover or Hater?
Well I haven’t tasted it. Vegemite put me off!
Vegemite is disgusting, blame the Ozzys! Marmite however tastes nothing like Vegemite.
Oh! I might like it then.
Right answer!

Linus has made a short film which if you keep up to date with his movements on his website you may get to have a sneaky glance of. I had my own private viewing headphones and all and it was amazing, I sat there in the café and came over all goose pimpled. The music has been specially produced for the film and features for the first time ever, a model that Linus has used for the second time. (He only ever uses models once) Linus also has an exhibition in Soho at the Claire de Rouen 121-125 Charing Cross Rd, so pop in to see some of his prints.

Fashanimals.....

Lots of news and updates and blogging going on about New York Fashion week so thought I should join in, just I decided to look at the bad stuff, the fashion mistakes!

After coming across one monstrosity & an outfit that seriously should hav
e been caged and fed banana's I concluded that a whole ark of animals could be made from some of the outfits www.nymag.com were calling their 'top 100 most hideous' designs.  It's a party up there I tell you, a barking, snorting, pig farmer party.......
